Ann Marais
Ann started working with clay in 1970, her interest grew to such an extend that in 1977 she took up ceramics on a full time basis. She studied BFA at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, majoring in theory of art and sculpture from 1988 - 1991.
The major partn of the work focuses on local, regional and continental environments in Africa. Years of interest in the cultural artifacts of the African Continenthave resulted in work where this aspect has been explored but re-interpreted through a Western sensibility.
Taken part in over 100 exhibitions in South Africa and abroad (France, Italy, New Zealand – 1995 Fletcher Challenge, Hong Kong and Namibia), over 70 of these exhibitions as in invited guest artist. Finalist in the 2004 Brett Kebble Arts Award Show, Cape Town.
Work in various museums – The Corobrik National Collection, Pretoria Art Museum, Pretoria: Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, Port Elizabeth, Durbanville Clay Museum, Durbanville, Cape: William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley, Ann Bryant Art Gallery, East London: Instituto d’Arte Castelli, Teramo, Italy and Musée de Ceramique, Vallauris, France.
Since mid 2005 all work has been porcelain sculpture concentrated on the human figure. These works are psychological portraits of our human foibles, failings, fears and fancies and capture us in our unguarded moments. Inner psychological landscapes can be read through body language, body size and facial expression of the figures
Ann won numerous awards and acted as a judje for CSA, EPIA Modus Award Exhibition, Port Elizabeth : “New Signatures Art Exhibition”, Bellville Association of Arts, Bellville. Work included in many newspapers, journals, newsletters, books and magazines.
