Pieter van der Westhuizen

1931 - 30.12.2008

In 1960 he worked under Alfred Krentz and in 1971 under Erik Laubscher. During 1979-80 he attended the National Hoger Institute voor Schone Kunst at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in Belgium. In 1982 and 1985 he continued his studies at the Stedelijke Akademie in Ghent and the Ryks Centrum voor Grafiek in Kasterlee, Belgium. During 1983 and 1985 he studied wood-block printing in Japan.
Pieter's work speak of love, serenity, tranquility and humour. He worked from everyday life expieriences from what was within and around him.
In his etching book "Life, love and landscapes" he said: "Making etchings for me is like writing a biography. Or making shorthand notes for a biography. You catch the moment. Whatever one sees, hears, feels, tastes or smells is filed in your memory and the shorthand notes will immediately recall it in detail. All this means that etchings are very personal and one's own sence of humour or sadness."
